One of the first questions almost every couple asks me is, “How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?”
After photographing more than 400 weddings across Melbourne, the Yarra Valley and destinations around Australia and overseas, I’ve found the answer is rarely about having more hours. It’s about having the right amount of time to tell your story naturally, without feeling rushed.
Every wedding is different. Your coverage depends on your ceremony time, whether you’re getting ready together or separately, if you’re planning a first look, how many locations you’re visiting and how much of your reception you’d love captured.
This guide will walk you through exactly what you can expect from 4, 6, 8 and 10 hours of wedding photography, so you can choose the coverage that’s right for your day.
If you’re planning a traditional wedding in Melbourne, 8 hours of wedding photography is the perfect amount of coverage for most couples.
Eight hours usually includes:
If you’re planning multiple locations, cultural celebrations or a late night dance floor, you may be better suited to 10 hours.
If you’re having an intimate wedding, registry ceremony or elopement, 4 or 6 hours may be all you need.
When helping couples build their wedding timeline, I always ask a few simple questions.
Do you want photos of both partners getting ready?
Will you be getting ready at different locations?
Are you planning a first look before the ceremony?
Are there multiple venues involved?
Would you love golden hour portraits around sunset?
Is the reception important to you, including speeches, cake cutting and dancing?
Every “yes” usually adds a little more time to your photography coverage.
The goal isn’t to fill every hour with photos. It’s to create enough space throughout the day so you can actually enjoy your wedding without constantly watching the clock.
Perfect for:
Four hours is ideal when your wedding is focused on the ceremony and portraits.
A typical 4 hour timeline may include:
If you’re keeping things simple, this can be the perfect amount of coverage while still capturing all the meaningful moments.
Perfect for:
Six hours gives you a little more breathing room and allows your story to unfold naturally.
A typical timeline could look like:
1:30 pm Photographer arrives
2:00 pm Final getting ready
3:30 pm Ceremony
4:00 pm Family photographs
4:30 pm Bridal party portraits
5:15 pm Couple portraits
6:00 pm Reception begins
7:30 pm Coverage finishes
For many relaxed weddings, six hours is plenty.
If you’re unsure what to book, this is almost always my recommendation.
Eight hours gives you enough flexibility that your day doesn’t feel rushed, while allowing me to capture the complete story from beginning to end.
A typical eight hour wedding includes:
It also gives us flexibility if your timeline shifts slightly, because weddings almost always run a little behind schedule.
If you’re wondering what eight hours of wedding photography actually feels like, it’s often easier to see a real wedding than imagine one.
For example, Nicolette and Andrew’s beautiful Coombe Yarra Valley Wedding included final preparations, a relaxed ceremony beneath the cypress trees, family photographs, romantic portraits throughout the gardens, and plenty of reception moments. As a result, they received a complete gallery that told the full story of their day without ever feeling rushed.

Likewise, if you’re getting married at one of Melbourne’s incredible winery venues, I recommend browsing a few real wedding galleries. Not only will they help you visualise your own day, but they’ll also give you inspiration for timelines, portrait locations and styling ideas.
Perfect for:
Ten hours allows me to document your day without ever feeling like we’re racing against the clock.
It often includes:
If your wedding has lots of moving parts, this extra coverage is absolutely worth considering.
| Coverage | Best For | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Hours | Elopements, registry weddings | Ceremony, family photos, portraits |
| 6 Hours | Smaller weddings | Preparation, ceremony, portraits, beginning of reception |
| 8 Hours | Most Melbourne weddings | Full story from preparations through reception |
| 10 Hours | Larger or cultural weddings | Everything from getting ready to dancing |
The biggest mistake I see isn’t booking too much photography.
Instead, it’s booking too little.
Almost every wedding runs behind schedule at some point. Hair and makeup takes longer than expected, family photos need a few extra minutes, guests naturally stop you for hugs after the ceremony, or travel between venues takes longer than planned.
As a result, portrait time is often the first thing couples feel they have to cut short.
However, when you’ve allowed enough photography coverage, none of these small delays become stressful. Instead, your day flows naturally, you can be fully present with your favourite people, and we still have plenty of time to create beautiful portraits.
Most importantly, you’ll remember how relaxed your wedding felt, not how rushed it was.
After photographing more than 300 weddings, I’ve found that couples rarely wish they’d booked fewer hours. Instead, they almost always tell me they’re so glad they gave themselves enough time to enjoy every moment.
Every wedding is different. That’s why I always recommend choosing your photography coverage based on your plans rather than what someone else booked.
For example:
Planning a relaxed winery wedding?
Eight hours is usually perfect for venues like Coombe Yarra Valley, Stones of the Yarra Valley, Fergusson Winery and Hubert Estate. This means we can comfortably capture preparations, your ceremony, family photographs, portraits, golden hour and the beginning of your reception.
Planning a registry wedding or intimate celebration?
Four to six hours is often all you’ll need. Even so, you’ll still receive a beautiful gallery documenting every meaningful moment.
Planning a large celebration with multiple locations?
Ten hours gives you the flexibility to photograph both partners getting ready, travel between venues, sunset portraits and plenty of dancing later in the evening.
Ultimately, every timeline is different. That’s why I work closely with every couple to build a personalised photography timeline before the wedding, ensuring you have the right amount of coverage without paying for hours you don’t need.
For intimate weddings or celebrations with one location and a shorter reception, yes.
If you’re having multiple locations or want your reception photographed, I’d usually recommend 8 hours instead.
For around 90% of the weddings I photograph, absolutely.
Eight hours provides enough time to tell the story of your day without feeling rushed.
If you’re having multiple locations, cultural traditions, a church ceremony or you’d love plenty of reception coverage, then yes.
Ten hours gives your day much more flexibility.
Absolutely.
Many of my couples decide to add an extra hour once they’ve finalised their timeline, and if I’m available, I’m always happy to accommodate this.
Yes, and it’s one of my favourite parts of the planning process.
Having photographed more than 300 weddings, I know how long things realistically take. Together we’ll create a timeline that allows you to enjoy your day while making the most of the best light and ensuring there’s plenty of time for beautiful, natural photographs.
After photographing hundreds of weddings across Melbourne and beyond, here’s my advice.
Let’s say you’re planning an intimate wedding or registry ceremony, choose 4 to 6 hours.
If you’re planning a full wedding day with preparations, ceremony and reception, 8 hours is the sweet spot and is the package I recommend most often.
If you’re planning a larger celebration with multiple locations or want every part of your story documented, 10 hours gives you complete peace of mind.
Every wedding is unique, which is why I help every couple build a personalised photography timeline that’s tailored to their plans.
If you’re still unsure how many hours you’ll need, I’d love to chat. Together we can create a timeline that feels relaxed, flows naturally and ensures every meaningful moment is beautifully documented.
